Fats have long been misunderstood, but they’re vital for good health. They serve as a concentrated energy reserve, protect organs, help absorb fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, and K), and form part of every cell membrane in the body.

The type of fat matters. Unsaturated fats—found in foods like avocados, nuts, seeds, olive oil, and fatty fish—support heart health and reduce inflammation. Saturated fats, common in red meat and full-fat dairy, should be eaten in moderation, while trans fats should be avoided altogether. Because fat is calorie-dense, even small amounts provide a lot of energy—an advantage for endurance athletes but something to monitor for those managing weight.

Although carbohydrates, proteins, and fats each have distinct roles, it’s their interaction that keeps the body running smoothly. Carbs provide quick energy, proteins repair and build tissues, and fats sustain energy over time. Together, they create balance.

The same principle applies to lunch and dinner—balanced meals help maintain energy, focus, and overall health throughout the day.

There’s no one-size-fits-all ratio of carbs, proteins, and fats. A marathon runner will need more carbohydrates to sustain endurance, while someone focused on strength training may benefit from slightly higher protein intake. Generally, fats should make up about 25–35% of total daily calories, but the quality of fat is more important than the exact percentage.

The best approach is to listen to your body and adjust based on energy levels, activity, and how you feel. A varied diet built around whole, minimally processed foods usually provides the right balance naturally.
